NASU, SSANU to Begin Nationwide Strike Today

By Charles Maduka

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) say they will begin an indefinite strike today.

The joint action committee (JAC) which represents these non-teaching staff unions has instructed all members across the country to join the strike.

The planned strike follows the government’s failure to pay four months’ worth of salaries, which were withheld when NASU and SSANU supported a previous strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during the Buhari administration.

Although the strike was initially planned for October 23, it was postponed because of a NASU meeting on that day. In a statement, JAC leaders Prince Peters Adeyemi of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim of SSANU explained that they rescheduled the strike to ensure better coordination.

They expressed frustration that, while President Bola Tinubu approved disbursement of 50% of the withheld salaries, the Finance Ministry has not followed through, causing doubts about the government’s commitment.

The unions say they are prepared to continue the strike until the full amount is paid.
