ASUU knocks FG’s decision to dissolve universities governing councils

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently expressed strong concern over the federal government’s decision to dissolve governing councils in universities across the nation.

The union urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider what they view as a problematic choice to dissolve the councils prematurely, without allowing them to complete their tenures of office.

 ASUU’s National Vice Chairman, Comrade Christopher Piwuna from the University of Jos, made these remarks while delivering a presentation at an event held in honor of retiring educators at Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), in Benue State.

Piwuna stated, “Dissolving governing councils and transferring their authority to the Federal Ministry of Education or the National Universities Commission (NUC) without proper adherence to university laws is misguided.

“Allowing a vacuum would also harm the universities, potentially enabling conniving vice chancellors and ministry officials to undermine our educational institutions if this blatant disregard for university establishment laws is not addressed.”

ASUU firmly urged President Tinubu to reverse the dissolution and restore the Governing Councils, emphasizing that upholding the law is crucial for a just and effective governance system.
