Waste collector caught stealing UNILAG cable charged to court

The University of Lagos, Department of Engineering on Tuesday caught a waste collector, Yusuf Agoro in the act of cutting an Internet cable that belongs to the school.

The Institution immediately contacted the Police who arraigned Yusuf to the Magistrate Court in Yaba.

He was charged on three counts of stealing by Magistrate Patrick Nwaka who held the brief for Magistrate S.A. Salawu, at the Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the act on August 2, 2023, at the institution’s Department of Engineering.

Oraibure went further to state that the offences does not conform to the regulation and are punishable under Sections 168(D) 350, and 406(2) of the Criminal Law of State of Nigeria 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Agoro Yusuf, and others at large on August 2, 2023, around 6pm at the Department of Engineering, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, in the Yaba Magisterial District did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, being a waste disposal worker in the school, criminally cut the cable that serves the department’s Internet office and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 168(d) of to the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

Upon which, the defendant, proceeded in pleading not guilty. In spite of that the magistrate granted Yusuf Agoro the bail of N500,000 including two sureties in like sum.

He also went further to adjourn the case to October 5, 2023, for mention.
