UnilagSun editor canvasses financial literacy among youths.

UnilagSun editor and final-year student of Mass Communication, at the University of Lagos, Faith Enang, has called for increased financial literacy among youths.

She gave an alumni address at the launch of the FinGreen Phase 2 initiative which was held in Lagos, on Wednesday, the 9th of August.

FinGreen initiative is the brainchild of QNET, a global wellness direct-selling company, and their partners, Transblue Limited, Financial Literacy for ALL, and the Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF). They aim to bridge the financial literacy gap in the country.

Enang, who was a member of the pilot scheme held last year, shared her experience as an Alumni. Initially, she had urges to buy an item but after listening to the trainer, she chose to rather invest the funds in her knowledge.

She said, “I followed financial experts and coaches on social media. I also read ‘The Richest Man in Babylon’ by George Clason but I was just reading to consume. I did not implement the lessons in my daily activities. But while seated in the hall, I vowed to invest in my knowledge rather than buy things that will depreciate in two years.

“FinGreen opened my eyes to how money can grow, express financial freedom by learning the right lessons, and make calculated risks.”

The training helped her learn the importance of proper financial understanding. She stressed that everyone must learn financial literacy as it’s an essential life skill.

The editor further implored participants to actively teach and share their lessons with other people as it would be helpful.

Her words, “You are expected to go out there and teach other people. Let’s all strive to increase Financial literacy for all individuals.”

The pilot phase which was launched last year has trained over 500 youths in Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Oyo States on financial literacy.

Biram Fall, QNET’s regional general manager for sub-Saharan Africa stated that 25 youths have been selected for phase two of the training. The beneficiaries will be trained to become Financial Literacy Youth Ambassadors and spread financial knowledge to others.
