UNILAG Introduces New BSc Programmes in Broadcasting, Public Relations

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has introduced undergraduate degree programmes in Broadcasting and Public Relations under its Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

A review of the institution’s 2026/2027 cut-off marks by the UNILAG Sun showed that the newly established faculty will admit students into the two programmes alongside Mass Communication.

According to the document, Mass Communication has a merit cut-off mark of 74.6, while Public Relations and Broadcasting have cut-off marks of 61.2 and 63.1, respectively.

The introduction of the programmes follows the restructuring of the former Department of Mass Communication into the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, with the new programmes providing specialised areas of study within the communication field.

Reacting to the development, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Prof Tayo Popoola, said the new programmes would help provide students with specialised training and equip them for opportunities in the global media industry.

“The whole essence of this unbundling is to give the best to our students, so that in the global market, they will be able to give their best to the global work community,” he said.

Popoola said the restructuring was also aimed at providing students with the academic, technological and professional resources required to compete in the changing media and communication industry.

He noted that the introduction of the new programmes would require continued development of infrastructure and specialised facilities within the faculty.

According to him, the faculty is working with stakeholders to improve its facilities and learning environment. He acknowledged the contributions of the UNILAG Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) towards facility development, office furnishing and improvements to learning spaces.

While infrastructure development remains ongoing, Popoola said the faculty would continue to utilise its existing facilities to support teaching and learning.

He urged students to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the new programmes and make effective use of the faculty’s digital tools, laboratories and other learning resources.

“My advice is that our students should take advantage of this new development, work very hard, or work harder, and make us proud,” he said.
