UNILAG establishes financial aid measures

The University of Lagos Management on Friday introduced measures to ease the financial burden of parents and students in paying wards’ obligatory fees.

This was signed into action on the 28^th of July 2023. The university in the statement “Unilag Management Rolls Out Measures to Ease Effects of The Reviewed Obligatory Fees” pointed out its steps to mitigate the impact of the hike in tuition.

The Management informed its university community that instalment “payment options have been made available to all students. However, payment must have been completed at the point of registration for the second (2nd) semester of any session.”.

Also, it highlighted the revival of the Work-Study Programme. “The student work-study programme has been revitalised to accommodate increased remuneration. Interested students can access the program through the Dean, Student Affairs Division.”

Another amenity which can be accessed through the Dean, Student Affairs division is scholarships. It read, “Students have the opportunity to access various scholarship schemes through the office of the Dean, Student Affairs Division.” The university equally announced its decision to assist indigent students through this unit.

The “adopt-a-student” project which stems from the “Adopt an Akokite” is another remedy to the school fees increase. It provides an opportunity for alumni and well-meaning Nigerians to assist students.

Furthermore, the university management is set to launch a “Pay for Mentors Project “aimed at assisting smart students. Here, smart students can tutor their colleagues and get paid for it

The final amenity mentioned in the statement shed light on the area of transportation. It revealed the universities partnership with Lagos Bus Rapid Transport System. Confirming that “the Management has secured approval from Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for additional BRT dedicated routes to convey passengers from Berger Bus Stop axis and Oshodi/Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State respectively.”

The reasons for the increase in fees were stated to be a result of the current economic realities in the country. The management expressed that these measures are to reduce the struggles that students and parents/guardians may encounter.
