UNILAG emerges first place in Moot Competition

Two students of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Joseph Olajugba, 500 level and Joshua Adeyeye, 400 level, have emerged in first place in the Maiden National Data Protection Moot Competition, upholding the university’s image as top class.

A call for participants was made for different universities to partake in the maiden edition of the National Data Protection Moot Court Competition to represent their respective institutions.

The two-part competition had eleven schools make it to the first stage. In the first stage, participants were required to write a memorial, which is a written argument about statements of fact in the first phase of the competition. The second stage progressed to an oral presentation of the written document, debating as though they were in an actual courtroom.

The second phase was hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), where eight schools participated after scaling through the first stage on the 1st day of the event, which was sponsored by Meta. The competition took place between Tuesday 1st and Thursday 3rd of November, with a mini-conference titled “Future of Data Protection in Nigeria”.

On the first day of the oral phase, the 8 schools competed in what was called a knockout stage (quarter-finals), from which winners advanced to the semi-finals held on the second day. Winners from the semi-final stage, representatives of the University of Lagos and University of Calabar then competed for first place in the final rounds of the competition on the third and final day.

After an engaging mooting session with Team Calabar at the final stage, Team UNILAG emerged winners of the 1st National Data Protection Moot Court Competition, with Team Calabar as 1st runner-up, and Team Olabisi Onabanjo as second runner-up.
