UMCAA to Facilitate Infrastructure Upgrade For Mass Communication Department

The University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) has stated its commitment to facilitating infrastructure upgrades for the Department of Mass Communication to create a more conducive learning environment for students and lecturers. 

UMCAA president, Mr. Adewale Williams in an exclusive interview with UNILAG Sun, highlighted the alumni body’s crucial role in the department’s growth and outlined key plans for its future. Mr. Williams emphasised that UMCAA has contributed significantly over the years through donations, infrastructural improvements, and efforts to bridge the gap between current students and alumni.

The president noted that UMCAA has been integral in supporting the department’s transition from a department to a full-fledged faculty. He listed the establishment of a new Public Relations Laboratory, revitalisation photography laboratory, and helping the department build a new faculty building with contributions from notable alumni as some of the association’s notable endeavours. 

“We are not just an alumni body; we are an active partner in the department’s development,” Mr. Williams said, noting that UMCAA has donated items like books, laptops, and equipment to enhance learning in the department.

He praised the association’s class of 1984 for donating Wi-Fi connectivity to the department, which has helped to reduce network challenges and enhance access to internet resources within the department’s premises.

Beyond infrastructure, Mr. Williams said that UMCAA has fostered career development by creating platforms for students and alumni to connect. 

“The Communication Festival and the establishment of the UMCAA Global Center were specifically designed to offer students real-world insights from industry professionals. We have also initiated an entrepreneurship competition to encourage students to think beyond traditional employment”, he said.

He further highlighted the importance of alumni engagement, revealing the association’s efforts to involve its members in various programs like the Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) and masterclasses. These initiatives, according to him, have led to the publication of books that serve as educational resources for both students and alumni.

Speaking on the strategies being adopted by the association to sustain long-term involvement among alumni, he stressed the importance of maintaining personal connections and also suggested that the incoming leadership continue the practice of visiting senior members to foster a stronger bond between the department and its graduates.

“The bond we have with the department is strong, but it’s essential that we pass on the torch and ensure future leadership keeps up the momentum,” he said.

As his tenure nears its end, Mr. Williams expressed confidence that UMCAA will continue to grow in influence and impact, ensuring that future generations of students benefit from the support and expertise of the alumni network.
