UMCAA Masterclass: A Bridge between Academia and the Industry

By Blessing Famose

The University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academia and industry through its innovative Masterclass program. The initiative, birthed in 2018, has become a cornerstone of support for the department and its students.

According to Mr. Lekan Sote, a key member of the UMCAA, the Masterclass was conceived as a platform for alumni to share their industry experiences with current students. “We wanted to ensure that the knowledge gained within the classroom is complemented by real-world insights,” he said.

The Masterclass, conducted primarily via a WhatsApp platform, offers a variety of perspectives from alumni spanning various fields within the mass communication industry. From journalism and advertising to public relations and media management, participants gain invaluable knowledge and insights

.Beyond knowledge sharing, the Masterclass has also served as a platform for alumni networking and support. Mr. Sote emphasized the association’s commitment to the well-being of its members, citing instances where financial assistance, job placement, and mentorship have been provided.

As the department prepares to welcome a new generation of mass communication students, the UMCAA’s Masterclass is poised to play an even more critical role in shaping their academic journey and professional development.

Dr. Tayo Popoola, the current editorial adviser for Unilagsun Newspaper and Mass Scope Magazine, expressed profound gratitude to the UMCAA for their unwavering support. He highlighted the association’s instrumental role in the department’s growth, particularly in the upcoming transition to a faculty with four distinct programs. “The UMCAA has been a constant source of support, and we look forward to a continued partnership as we embark on this new chapter,” Dr. Popoola said.

By fostering a strong bond between academia and industry, the UMCAA Masterclass is undoubtedly leaving a lasting impact on the department and its students.
