TETFUND to enhance varsities research capabilities

In a significant move to bolster research capabilities in Nigerian universities, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) has formed an ad hoc committee tasked with creating central multipurpose laboratories within select universities across the nation.

Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Sonny Echono, announced the committee’s inauguration in
Abuja, emphasizing the importance of investing in research infrastructure to drive economic growth and global competitiveness.

Echono highlighted TETFUND’s substantial financial commitment to research programs and
projects, emphasizing the need to enhance Research and Development (R&D) to address national challenges.

The agency has already awarded numerous research grants under the National Research Fund, supporting scholars in various academic disciplines.

Furthermore, Echono acknowledged that some researchers have faced challenges due to inadequate research facilities, forcing them to seek resources abroad. This has led to financial burdens and time constraints on research projects.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of laboratory infrastructure. TETFUND
had allocated significant funds to support research related to the pandemic, but a lack of essential laboratory infrastructure hindered progress.

He also stressed that improved research infrastructure could significantly enhance the global
ranking of Nigerian universities.

The committee has one month to submit its report, signaling a swift effort to advance research capabilities in Nigerian universities.
