The Mass Communication Students’ Association (MCSA), University of Lagos is set to host Fisayo Soyombo, Founder of Foundation for Investigative Journalism, Chuka Obi, Director of Creativity and Innovations, Globacom Nigeria, and Jumoke Alawode-James, Managing Director of Oluwaloniyo Limited as guest speakers at the third Media Symposium tagged ‘Beat the Odds’, the virtual event which is a part of its annual MCSA Week activities is slated to hold on Thursday, August 19, and Friday, August 20, 2021. The symposium will be held virtually on the social networking site, Zoom.
Speaking on the choice of invited guest speakers, the convener of the summit and President of MCSA Unilag, Paul Agada said: “We have three topics for each of the speakers in the specialties. ‘Journalism for Good and Nation Building’ by Fisayo Soyombo who has worked so hard to reveal the truth. We look up to him very much more and we are very happy to have him.
“The award-winning Chuka Obi who wrote the iconic Saka I don Port ad will speak on ‘Finding Your Niche’. It’s that kind of creativity we want because we have so many students who don’t even know what they want to do. So, it’s an opportunity.
“And then from someone we look up to, Mrs. Jumoke Alawode-James, ‘Breaking Through the Noise:Creating Content That Sells’. You know the internet is full, everybody is now a content creator so let’s hear from the maestro herself on how to create content.
He also stated that the symposium is an avenue to motivate communicators to look beyond the constraints of Covid-19 even as he prepares to hand over to his successors.
“The media symposium ‘beat the odds’, you know is an avenue for us to encourage communicators to look beyond the challenges that were posed by the pandemic and to see that all things are possible no matter the odds you can come out victorious.
“It’s my time as the President and I’m going to be handling over soon. I hope my successors will continue this legacy. Hopefully.”
The media symposium is just one of many activities included in MCSA’s departmental week scheduled to be held virtually from Monday, August 16 to Friday, August 20, 2021. Other activities will include a creative writing workshop, a sequel to its first edition convened by the Vice President of the department, Olusola Favour on June 27th, 2021.
Other activities for the week include Face of Mass Communication online beauty pageantry, and the maiden edition of the ADWAVE Awards competition, a pilot edition organized to encourage creativity amongst its students across print, broadcast, and advertising sequences. The awards, according to Paul Agada, are also a means to “put our money where our mouth is”.
It was gathered from a communique sent by the department’s Public Relations Officer, Oluwasegun Oyebode that this year’s departmental week is themed “Lockdown” due to the constraints which the coronavirus pandemic has placed on the 2019/2020 administration in the past year.
According to him, participants of the Face of Mass Communication will be awarded the sum of N20,000, N10,000, and N5,000 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions respectively.
He also added that the Adwave Awards competition will not only feature creative submissions from students as participants all stand a chance of winning 120, 000 Naira cash prizes as well as an internship opportunity with Xtreme Ideas.
