More to makeup than meets the eye

Contrary to popular opinion, not all who wear makeup are insecure about their looks; sometimes they just want to look good. Since ancient times, makeup has been used to enhance beauty. Women of the old world would often display innovativeness in satisfying their cosmetic needs. For example, it was common practice for them to use berries to darken lips, the equivalent of modern lipsticks; and kohl, a black powder gotten from a dark grey ore were used to darken eyes, the equivalent of modern eye shadows.

Contemporary makeup, however, has evolved and taken a completely different turn, from using foundations to concealers, powders, eyeliners, lipstick, etc. Makeup has now been classified into various categories to fit the fashion needs of the different types of people in the world.

– Natural Makeup: This style suits women with conservative tastes, who desire light enhancement.

– Gothic Makeup: This involves the use of dark eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks, this style of makeup is quite extreme and favoured by those who want to make a statement.

– Pin-up Makeup: Bold colours, most times characterise this style of makeup.

It is also very important to note that “healthy skin equals good makeup.” Skincare plays a very vital role in product placement and its appearance. Think of your skin as an art canvas. A canvas that is smooth and clean allows paint to brush a lot easier, allowing the pigment to show its true colours. Dirt and texture tend to build up if the skin is not properly taken care of, thereby ruining the whole makeup process.

Makeup is used all over the world for different practices and in different cultures. It has become a common feature of everyday life and even influences social interaction. It has become a niche where people of interest can acquire skills and specialise for their sustenance; and to others, makes a statement, builds confidence, happiness and passion.
