For many, modeling thrives solely on physical beauty. As renowned French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier once said, “In fashion, you have to be beautiful. If you are not beautiful, you cannot make it.”

But, for Hamidat, modelling is much more than beauty, as it is a powerful platform to challenge these stereotypes. In an exclusive interview with UNILAG Sun, Hamidat expressed her desire to go beyond her physical appearance and showcase her creativity and skills.

“I want the world to see me, to see the real me, to see what’s inside. Because people just see the physical appearance and just assume what they want to assume. I want to be known for more than just my physical beauty,” she said. “I also want to inspire young girls like me to realize that there’s no limit to what they can achieve.”

Hamidat’s journey began not as a confident pageant queen, but as a shy, self-doubting girl. Over time, however, she discovered the courage to find her voice. “When I heard about the Most Beautiful Girl In Lagos pageantry, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to challenge myself and take a leap of faith.”

This confidence wasn’t achieved overnight. It was the result of facing challenges head-on and redefining her understanding of self-worth. “Since my journey into pageantry, I’ve discovered several new positives about myself. I’m more resilient than I thought. I’ve learned to handle pressure, criticism, and rejection with grace and poise. I’ve discovered that I have a voice, and it deserves to be heard.”

Her journey into pageantry also taught her some things. “Through interacting with fellow contestants and community members, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. I’m more empathetic and compassionate.”

One of Hamidat’s key areas of focus is women’s empowerment and education. She is committed to using her platform to promote these causes and encourage self-acceptance among women. Balancing personal life, pageantry, and academics isn’t easy, but Hamidat remains committed to excelling in all aspects. She plans to do this by prioritizing her well-being, staying organized, and seeking support.

As the reigning Most Beautiful Girl in Lagos, she hopes to inspire others in the pageantry world to break free from society’s narrow expectations. She’s also committed to championing the course for persons with disabilities, ensuring that they have equal opportunities and respect.

“My dream is to create a platform where people with disabilities feel heard, seen, and valued and where women feel safe to share their stories and seek support without fear of judgment or stigma.”

The beauty queen is also investing in human capital development as she has engaged herself in quite a few. “I am a strong believer in the power of skill acquisition, and I have taken the initiative to learn various skills, such as sewing, hairdressing and bead making which I believe will enable me to empower others and create positive change in the community.”

While Hamidat’s journey may seem glamorous on the surface, she’s had challenges, particularly self-confidence and financial struggles. “I had to self-finance myself at a point it got too draining and I wanted to quit. But my dreams and aspirations kept me going.”

As she continues her journey, Hamidat remains clear about her dream to foster a community where everyone, regardless of the challenges, gender and disabilities, feels valued and can find support and strength. Representing Lagos is more than just a title for her; it’s a mission to uplift and inspire those around her, proving that beauty truly comes from within.
