ASUU debunks strike rumour

By Michael Alabi

President of the Academic staff union of universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has refuted claims of fresh strike action by the union.

He made this known during a conversation with TheCable.

Osodeke described the reports as “Malicious and unfortunate”.

“We never mentioned the issue of another strike. Are we looking to create confusion? I’m just confused,” he said.

Rumours have been making the rounds that ASUU is considering a fresh strike action following a verdict in favour of the federal government’s ‘no work, no pay’ policy.

Recall that on may 30, 2023, the National Industrial court upheld the ‘no work, no pay’ policy by the Federal government in the suit filed against ASUU.

ASUU reviewed the issue on August 19 amid a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Maiduguri.

Osodeke said the ‘no work, no pay’ policy neglected the fact that only the teaching component of academic work was suspended during the strike.

One of the issues raised amid ASUU’s NEC meeting in Borno were promotion arrears.
