The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will kick off the 2026 Detty December season with a stage performance of Ola Rotimi’s historical play, Kúrunmí, on December 18, 2026.
The play, directed by Makinde Adeniran, President of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), narrated the story of Kúrunmí, the Ààrẹ Ọ̀nà Kakanfọ̀ and ruler of Ijaiye in the old Oyo Empire.
According to the University, the event follows the success of its inaugural Detty December experience in 2025, which celebrated Nigerian culture through theatre, music and visual arts.
It noted that this year’s edition of UNILAG in Town is an extension of the University’s “Gown to Town” initiative, aimed at connecting the University’s creative talents with wider audiences.
The institution noted that Since its debut in 2023 with Èṣù and the Vagabond Minstrels, the initiative has also staged productions such as Love and Colours in Delphi, Mórẹmí and Who Is Afraid of Solarin?
UNILAG said more details about the production and ticket sales will be announced soon.
