UNILAG MCSA rolls out MCSA Week ‘23 activities

The Mass Communication Students Association, UNILAG has rolled out her line of activities for the 2023 departmental week.

The department made this announcement yesterday during a state of the union address preceding the week at the department.

Giving the address, the MCSA President, Hassan Oluwatobi recalled that the current administration which started in November, 2021 was founded on the principle of Inclusivity and Student Welfarism. He said that the same principles would guide the forthcoming departmental week with benefits for every student.

“My tagline was ‘Uniter, not divider’ and that has always driven what we’ve tried to do going forward. We try to include as many MCSAites in our activities. The many teams and committees we have are testament to these.

“As for student welfarism, that is pretty much why you elected us in the first place. You elected us to be your representatives and look after your affairs and guide the affairs of the department and the student association and to interface on your behalf with the powers that be. ” He remarked.

The union observed a minute of silence in respect of a colleague who passed on in the course of the ongoing tenure, Wuraade Adekoya. In addition to this, Hassan remarked that incessant strikes and finance have posed a challenge to the current administration.

He said, “You would understand that the situation of things right now are a bit difficult than they were nine, ten months ago. The budget for all of our activities for the second semester totalled about 5 million. The total of everything we were able to raise in dues even after increment was about 2.3 million.”

Hassan reminisced about the last MCSA week which held two administrations away particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted the school calendar in the last tenure depriving two sets of a proper deportment week.

The president therefore declared the 2023 MCSA week rightly themed as “Resurgence”, as the week is bringing all back bigger and stronger, “We are coming back bigger, stronger and better.”

Activities for the week kick off with Faaji Monday, a celebration of various cultural ethnicities for all MCSAites. Best dressed cultural attires would be awarded as well as winners of a newly introduced cooking competition amongst different levels.

This would be followed by a business and literacy session on Tuesday. The president remarked that this newly introduced session was added to provide students with multiple opportunities to learn about businesses and improve their financial literacy.

Talented MCSAites would get a chance to compete and display their excellencies on Wednesday at the Afe Babalola Auditorium of the University. An Exhibition and Trade Fair would hold at the same venue the following day for creative MCSAites to show their non-performing creative sides while the grand finale would be the Mr & Miss Mass Comm pageantry. Winners get to be the face of the department for the next year. He added that the registration forms for the pageantry were free and open to all.

Fielding press questions about ADWAVE competition, a brainchild of the previous Paul Agada led administration, Hassan remarked that the current administration had plans to increase the total prize money by at least 5 times.

He also added that there would be a pre-training session before the competition to ensure the participants are well groomed and that the details of the competition would be released at a later date.

He enjoined all to support the executives and added that the week was still open to sponsors. Interested parties could contact the executives for full details.
