UNILAG MCSA Hosts 2023/2024 Freshers Orientation

The Mass Communication Students Association, UNILAG on Friday, the 12th of January, 2024 welcomed its newest students for the 2023/2024 session with an orientation program into the department.

The event themed “Foundational Steps Towards Academic Success” was targeted at freshers from both Mass Communication and Library and Information Science (LIS).

The President of MCSA, Seyifunmi Soremikun, officially welcomed them and spoke on the importance of balancing academic life with other aspects of student life.

The department’s HOD, Prof. Adepoju Tejumaiye, also congratulated the students and urged them to make the most of their UNILAG experience.

The event was graced by various people in the media industry like Samuel Iboroma (Coca-Cola HBC), Precious Chukwudi (Vanguard Digital Hub), Temitope Joseph (Dentsu Creative), Oyewusi Omoboyejo (photographer), and the outgoing BGS of the 2021/2022 session, Muhammadulfatiu Adepoju, shared their experience and expertise to the students.

Muhammadulfatiu inspired the freshmen with his talk on “Success Strategies in Academics,” stressing the three pillars of his own academic excellence: having a strategy, developing effective learning habits, and staying determined.

A panel discussion brought together industry experts Samuel Iboroma, Precious Chukwudi, Temitope Joseph, and Oyewusi Omoboyejo, allowing students to hear insights from different media sectors and ask questions. Samuel encouraged the freshmen, saying, “Now is the best time to practice. Find your passion and observe everything around you.”

Former MCSA President Hassan Oluwatobi who was also present, advised students to prioritize their education while seeking relevant skills outside the classroom. He also highlighted the importance of building strong relationships with classmates.

The event featured career talks, panel sessions, mentorship opportunities, special appearances, and vibrant artist performances.

The event concluded with a surprise from the MCSA President, who awarded, the first freshman, Amina, to arrive at 8 am, a 5,000 naira prize for her punctuality. This gesture served as a final message of encouragement to the new cohort as they embark on their academic journey at UNILAG.
