UNILAG graduates 12,217 students

The University of Lagos on Tuesday began the awarding of Bachelor’s degrees to 12, 217 students who are graduating from the 2019/2020 session.

The graduates, whose convocation marks the 52nd ceremony of the school, are gathered at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium of the university.

7,799 of the 12, 217 students were awarded first degrees or diplomas across various faculties while 4,418 received postgraduates degrees.

Addressing a press conference which held at the University’s Senate Chamber last week, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe gave a further breakdown of the graduating students.

238 students graduated with the first class degree,2,454 students finished in the Second-Class Upper Division, 3,459 obtained Second-Class Lower Division, 1,183 students bagged third class degrees, while 85 students made a pass grade.

Out of the 4,418 postgraduate students, 145 students will today be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), 3,863 will obtain master’s degrees while 410 will receive Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD).

Ogundipe noted that the Faculty of Engineering led the 238 first class graduates with 63 first class students, while the rest 201 students obtaining degrees were unclassified.

“The overall best graduating student in the first-degree category for the 2019/2020 session is Ekeoseye Elizabeth Osereme of the Faculty of science, department of Zoology. She would be graduating with a CGPA of 4.95 out of 5.0.

“The best graduating student from the humanities is Ataranshe Oluwaseyi Gideon of the faculty of Management Sciences, department of accounting, who is graduating with a CGPA of 4.92”.

Worthy of note also is the fact that this convocation marks Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe’s last convocation as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos.

Recall that the ceremonies kicked off with a convocation lecture delivered by the speaker, House of Representatives and 1983 Law Graduate of the University, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, on Monday at the same J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium of the school as part of the ceremony.
