TWO INSTITUTIONS TO BECOME UNIVERSITIES IN LAGOS - SANWO-OLU

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday made it known that two higher institutions in Lagos State will be upgraded to the status of universities.

Sanwo-Olu said this while speaking at the 60th birthday ceremony and book launch of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe.

He disclosed his plans to improve tertiary education in Lagos State as the state has only two universities.

He mentioned that Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) is going to be converted into a university of Science and technology.

“This is so as to end the disadvantage issues in the civil service when people come in as OND or HND holders. They usually have the disparity in the growth in the civil service, even in private sector and we need to bridge that gap”, he explained.

The Governor also mentioned a merger that is to take place between Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) and MOCPED (Micheal Otedola College of Primary Education) Epe to become a university of education.

According to him, this is because “NCE is no longer fashionable as of today and most sought after teachers are always University graduates”.

He also added that the establishment of those two universities will compliment the students needing admission into higher institutions especially in Lagos State considering the size of the city.

Sanwo-Olu on another note, made mention of the introduction of vocational education into secondary schools in form of comprehensive education for Jss3 students.

“We want them to acquire soft skills like entrepreneural and tech skills as a means for them to become employers of labour in the nearest future because the labour market is large”, he said.
