The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to complete the payment of outstanding arrears contained in its 2026 agreement with the union, warning that failure to comply could lead to an indefinite strike.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the ultimatum during a press briefing in Abuja while presenting resolutions from the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the weekend.
Ibrahim said that although implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement had commenced in some universities, payments remained incomplete in others.
He accused the government of implementing the payment process unevenly, attributing the delays to funding and administrative challenges.
According to him, the union would no longer tolerate delays in implementing the agreement, which he said was designed to address outstanding issues affecting its members.
The ultimatum follows an earlier warning issued by SSANU on October 1, 2026, over delays in the implementation of the agreement.
The union said it would not accept what it described as “unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or any attempt to diminish” the financial and non-financial provisions of the agreement.
Ibrahim said the agreement must result in tangible benefits for members, stressing that agreements reached with the government should translate into concrete action.
“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” he said.
The SSANU president also directed the union’s branches and zones nationwide to monitor the implementation of the agreement, maintain accurate membership records and document cases of non-compliance or victimisation.
The directives, he said, would enable the union to track the implementation process and submit timely reports to the National Secretariat.
