ASUU, FG Committee Set To Meet Tomorrow

Professor Chris Piwuna, the vice president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has announced the formation of a committee to tackle issues raised by members of ASUU.

He said this at the end of a closed-door meeting held yesterday between ASUU’s leadership and representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education.

“The meeting is over; committees were set up to resolve the IPPIS/EAA and salary areas stuff. The committee is to meet 11th, next week,” Professor Piwuna said.

During a national executive council meeting in Ibadan on the 19th of August, ASUU members threatened to embark on a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to honour the renegotiated agreement reached between the duo in 2009.

Addressing journalists on the proposed strike, Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, expressed the government’s commitment to resolving ASUU’s grievances.

Professor Mamman had appealed to ASUU to be considerate and open-minded in their approach at the negotiation table so that the interests of all parties would be well represented.

ASUU’s demands date back to 1981, and successive governments have had to contend with various strikes by the union.

ASUU’s demands include improvements in welfare and university funding and the halting of the proliferation of universities nationwide.
