The National Universities Commission (NUC) has conducted a resource verification exercise at the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Lagos (UNILAG), as part of the periodic reaccreditation of the programme.
The exercise was conducted on Wednesday, September 23 2026, by a team from the NUC, alongside members of the University’s Academic Planning Unit, led by its director, Professor Olufunlayo Bammeke, and members of the Faculty, who inspected facilities and resources across the Faculty.
The exercise is aimed at assessing the adequacy of the department’s human and material resources, curriculum, student and staff welfare, and record-keeping.
According to Dr. Ebony Oketumbi, Chairman, Faculty Resource Verification and Reaccreditation Committee and Sub-Dean of the Faculty, findings from the exercise will provide a checklist for University management to identify areas requiring improvement and guide efforts to address them.
“The flaws identified by the team constitute a checklist that the University management will use for improvement of the system. So even though the assessment involves criticism, the criticisms can sometimes be positive,” he said.
He also noted that the assessment considers requirements including an adequate staff to student ratio and specialised facilities such as a broadcast studio, Public Relations laboratory, and print workshop.
The exercise also evaluates the adequacy of the department’s curriculum in equipping students with professional skills they can apply upon graduation.
The resource verification exercise follows a separate NUC visit to the Faculty earlier in the year to assess the Faculty’s readiness for new academic programmes in Public Relations and Advertising, as well as Journalism, Broadcasting and Media Studies.
