Professor Mohammed Usman, a respected academic in the Department of Chemical Engineering, will deliver the University of Lagos’ 19th Inaugural Lecture for the 2024/2025 academic session on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The lecture, titled “Is Carbon Truly as Guilty as Charged? The Perspective of a Process Systems Engineer on Sustainability,” centers around the beliefs about carbon and offer a new, science-based perspective on the issue of climate change.
Professor Usman is expected to draw from his expertise in systems engineering to explain the real role of carbon in sustainability. His goal is said to correct common misconceptions and inspire fresh thinking on environmental matters.
Professor Usman has earned a reputation for making complex ideas simple and relatable. “Professor Usman is a catalyst of the mind,” said Joseph Musa, a former student and Managing Director of Vitavisco Nigeria Limited. “He taught me to approach difficult engineering problems from the basics. That method transformed how I learn.”
The lecture is expected to draw academics, students, alumni, professionals, and members of the public. It is not only an academic discussion but also a recognition of Professor Usman’s years of work in education and national development.
