The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has emerged as top Nigerian university in the global best university ranking for the year 2027, alongside Covenant University and University of Ibadan (UI).
It was contained in a published article by Times Higher Education (THE) website on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
THE noted UNILAG was placed between 801 and 1000 in the global ranking, a spot it shared with Covenant University and UI.
According to the ranking body, the three institutions are all based in the Southwest, adding that they lead the nation’s contingent as Nigeria’s highest-ranked universities for next year’s edition.
They added that these top ranked institutions are followed by two northwestern institutions, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and Bayero University (BU) which ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
According to THE data, UNILAG is ranked highest in quality research with a score of 67.8.
Also adding that Nigeria recorded 29 ranked universities in the 2027 edition, an increase from last year’s figure of 24.
The body said five universities were newly ranked, including Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kwara State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
