The UNILAG Marines booked a place in the semi finals of the 2024 FASU Games with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Universitie Julius Nyerere dè Kankan on Thursday evening to set up a much anticipated semi final clash against co-hosts Lagos State University.
The Marines went into the encounter at the LASU Sports Centre knowing that a draw was enough to seal qualification after gaining 6 points from their first three games while the match was a must win encounter for the Guineas.
Isaac Olaonipekun opened scoring for the Marines with a brilliant header from a resultant corner as the Marines tried to add another before full time.
However, the Guinean team were ready to stage a late comeback when Kaba’s 84th minute lovely solo effort beat goalkeeper Micheal Valour and they continued to push for a match winner amidst resolute defensive efforts by the Marines stalwart partnership of Chisom Odili, Adebambo Isiaka, Somtochukwu Obi, and Osigwe Bright.
As the referee signalled full time, the visitors from Akoka heaved a huge sigh of relief as the UNILAG Marines finished second in group B with 7 points, ahead of University of Development Studies, Ghana who gained 9 points from 4 matches.
The Semi Finals which would be played at the LASU Sports Centre on Friday would see University of Development Studies face Federal University, Oye, Ekiti while Lagos State University will face University of Lagos in a Lagos derby that promises to be exciting and pulsating.
