UNILAG Is Ready For Solution-Driven Research Partnerships — UNILAG Mgt

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) management has expressed its readiness and openness to partnerships that promote solution-driven research and foster development across all human spheres.

This was stated by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, and her counterpart in charge of Academics and Research, Professor Bola Oboh, during a meeting with faculty members from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, U.S.A., and officials from the Institute of Human Virology (IHV), Nigeria.

The delegation visited UNILAG to explore potential partnerships in cancer, sickle cell, and non-communicable diseases. Professors Atsenuwa and Oboh emphasized that UNILAG, as a citadel of excellence in research, has a history of building global partnerships to address contemporary challenges across all spheres of humanity.

The two Deputy Vice-Chancellors highlighted the various Centers of Excellence and Innovation Hubs within the University and the milestones achieved by these centres in seeking solutions to different national and global issues. They assured the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s representatives of UNILAG’s readiness to proceed with the collaboration once all arrangements have been finalized.

In his remarks, Professor Mark Gladwin, Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, acknowledged that his university has made significant strides in stemming the HIV/AIDS pandemic over the last 20 years. He attributed this success to research collaborations with reputable institutions worldwide.

Professor Gladwin praised the University of Lagos College of Medicine (CMUL) and Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for being valuable partners with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, particularly in projects concerning sickle cell, malaria, and tuberculosis care.Professor Gladwin also commended the quality of the faculty at UNILAG. He noted that the quality of the teaching staff would greatly contribute to the anticipated collaborations, especially in cancer, sickle-cell care, and other training and research opportunities, ultimately promoting the advancement of quality healthcare.
