Prof. Oloruntola Sunday Becomes HOD, Mass Comm Department

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) management has announced the appointment of Professor Abraham Oloruntola Sunday as the new Head, Department of Mass Communication. This appointment is effective from August 1, 2024, and ends on July 31, 2027.

Acting Registrar Mrs. Olokunle E. Makinde announced the appointment on July 26, 2024, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, wishing Professor Sunday a successful tenure as he guides the department for the next three years.

Despite being privy to discussions about his potential appointment as the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Professor Abraham Oloruntola Sunday remained humble, acknowledging that the final decision rested with the university administration. In an interview with UNILAG Sun on August 6, 2024, Professor Sunday revealed that he was informed of his potential appointment by the outgoing Head of Department, Professor Adepoju Tejumaye, but emphasized that the official appointment was contingent upon the approval of the Dean and the Vice Chancellor.

In this interview, Professor Sunday highlighted the importance of teamwork in moving the department forward. He emphasized that the department relies on alumni and internal funding for improvements and suggested possible collaboration with other institutions for research opportunities. He also stressed the need for monthly lectures to promote growth and development among faculty members. Professor Sunday’s vision for the department is one of collective effort, self-development, and cooperation.
