UNILAG Appoints Renowned US-Based Physician Visiting Professor

Dr. Olurotimi Badero, a Nigerian-born physician based in the United States, has been appointed a Visiting Professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University Of Lagos, (UNILAG).

Dr. Badero is recognized as the world’s first and only board-certified interventional cardionephrologist. His dual expertise in cardiology and nephrology allows him to provide and make health decisions across both fields.

His appointment shows a persistent effort in strengthening medical education in Nigeria through diaspora engagement and mentorship programs.

He hails from Isonyin, Ogun state, his academic record marks a historic milestone as he is also believed to be the first Professor of Medicine from his town.

His journey epitomizes the roles of diaspora professionals in helping to rebuild and change the narrative of Medicine in the local system.

Dr. Badero serves both home and abroad as he holds a part time position as the Clinical Head and Director of the Interventional Cardiology program and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Iwosan Lagoon hospital in Lagos.

He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Cardiac Renal and Vascular Associates in Jackson, Mississippi.

As the Visiting Professor, his roles include mentorship programs for medical residents and cardiology consultants, supporting research innovations and collaboration and also helping the university’s training to be at par with global standards. His role is expected to serve as an encouragement to other diasporan professionals to help invest their skills in the country’s healthcare and academic sector.

The appointment is a significant one as it comes in a time when the country is faced with major setbacks in the medical line.

Dr. Badero’s engagement is aimed to help build solidarity and foster innovation locally.
