Student Union Establishment Committee Report Ready – UNILAG VC

Prof. Folashade Ogunsola

By Daniel Kelechi

Amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the reinstatement of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Lagos, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola has announced that the long-awaited report from the Student Union establishment committee has been finalized and submitted to the university senate. She shared this information during an exclusive interview with UNILAG Sun.

“Student unionism is not just about the students. We’re going to ensure that this environment is safe for everybody, as well as our property. The panel that worked on the report had at least six students who contributed to the report. What I don’t want to do is for us to have to proscribe the students’ union again because the two occasions it was proscribed were due to violence.

“We feel that UNILAG must have a great student union. Leadership is not about violence, it’s not about I must have what I want. It’s about negotiation and giving a superior argument and not running a parallel government against the university. That must be very clear,” she said.

She related the antagonistic approach to unionism in Nigeria to be a relic of the military era of Nigeria where unions were always at loggerheads with the military.

Prof. Ogunsola added that a Student Welfare Centre is currently under construction and it will house the student union secretariat when fully completed.

According to her, the Student Experience Centre will have a leadership academy where students will be trained in the art of leadership.
