No Course Exists Without Entrepreneurial Component — UNILAG Consult MD Asks Students to Look Beyond Grades

The managing director of UNILAG Consult, John Oyefara, says no academic course at the University of Lagos exists without an entrepreneurial component, urging students to look beyond grades and identify practical opportunities within their disciplines.

Oyefara said this in an interview with UNILAG Sun, noting that the organisation’s core objective is to help students recognise value beyond passing examinations and leverage their courses for career and business growth.

According to him, many students focus solely on attending lectures and memorising course content without understanding how their fields can be applied entrepreneurially.

“Students just believe, ‘let me go to class, read, cram it, and move on’,” he said.

“They do not see the entrepreneurial components of the courses they are doing. It’s an issue of knowledge.”

He said UNILAG Consult plans to embark on advocacy visits to departments across the university to sensitise students to the practical and entrepreneurial benefits of their courses and how the Consult can support them.

“We have decided to develop advocacy visits to other departments in the university to let them know what students can benefit from us,” he said.

Oyefara added that lecturers are already aware of the entrepreneurial dimensions of their disciplines, noting that many academics engage in professional services and consultancy alongside teaching.

He said the professional certification programmes run by UNILAG Consult are aimed at equipping students with practical skills and strengthening human capital development.

The MD said UNILAG Consult currently offers over 30 programmes, including project management, special education and artificial intelligence.

Oyefara also disclosed that the Ministry of Education, through the World Bank, has engaged UNILAG Consult on new skill-acquisition initiatives.

He said the organisation will continue to innovate and respond to societal needs while exposing more students to its operations.

He added that students from departments such as Economics, Sciences and Engineering already undertake industrial attachments at the Consult.
