MCSA Male Football Team Falter in 2-1 Loss After Strong Start

On Thursday, the Mass Communications Students Association (MCSA) male football team lost 2-1 to the Electrical and Electronics Engineering team. Their loss came after a 2-0 victory over its opponents from the Building Department in its first match of the inaugural edition of the Departmental Champions League (DCL).

While goals from Izekor Gifted and Lawal-Akapo Basit, both ICE students in 300- and 200-level, were enough to help the team start with a win, a lone goal from Gifted was not enough to keep the boys from the Faculty of Engineering at bay as they eventually scored a second goal.

The 50-minute match started at about 5:20 pm and saw the Electrical and Electronics Engineering boys score first. A goal from Izekor Gifted closed the deficit before the Electronics Engineering boys ended the scoring with the winner in the second half.

The MCSA boys are currently second in their four-team group, with the boys from Business Administration in first position with 4 points after playing a 0-0 draw on Friday in a match against Building, who have just one point from two games so far.

As only two teams will qualify for the quarterfinals from each of the four groups in the 16-team invitation-based tournament between selected departments in the University of Lagos, the MCSA boys are in a precarious position as they seek to not only return to winning ways but also seek to avoid going out of the competition.

Based on the current standing, a win in their next game against current table-toppers Business Administration might be enough to see them through to the quarterfinals.

The MCSA team is gunning for the 100,000 Naira cash prize in the first edition of the Departmental Champions League organised by the Architecture Department.

The boys play Business Administration in their next match on Saturday; they hope to return to the form that brought their opening 2-0 win.
