NASU, SSANU Meet FGN, to Suspend Strike May 11

SSANU and NASU

By Iman Aiyeola

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its branches to prepare to suspend their joint strike from May 11, 2026.

This follows a May 5 meeting with the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Expanded Renegotiation Committee.

The unions had on April 30 declared an indefinite strike, which commenced on May 1, 2026, following the Federal Government’s failure to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

In a circular addressed to branch chairmen, the unions disclosed that the meeting with the committee, led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, revealed the need to obtain President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for any further review of the government’s previous offer.

The deliberations led to an appeal for the suspension of the strike, alongside a commitment that renegotiations, including a reviewed offer of the CONTTA, would be concluded within two weeks of the suspension.

“The leadership of the JAC considered the passionate appeal for the suspension of the ongoing strike action”, the document read.

The unions, therefore, urged branch leaders to note the appeal and prepare for a suspension of the strike, effective Monday, May 11 2026.
