First in 5 Years: Unilag Law Student Breaks into Bank of America Summer Analyst Program

In a world where law, tech, and finance don’t often mix, especially for students, Similoluwa Sowunmi is boldly changing the game.

At just 22, this University of Lagos law student has made history as the first person from her faculty in five years to earn a spot in the Global Summer Analyst Program at Bank of America. It’s a big win, not just for her, but for every young African dreaming of more.

For Similoluwa, this isn’t just about landing an international opportunity. It’s about showing what’s possible when young Africans push past the limits and step into their full potential. While studying law, she chose to take a different path, diving into software engineering, product management, dispute resolution, and finance. There was no guidebook, but she created her own: seeking mentorship, picking up new skills, and earning certifications that opened doors she never imagined.

“I got to a point in my law journey where I felt like something was missing,” she says. “I knew I wanted more, I wanted to see how law connects with other industries.”

So, when the Bank of America opportunity came up, it wasn’t just another shot in the dark. It was the result of years of hard work, faith, and clarity of purpose. The selection process was tough, but she leaned into it with grace, focus, and God on her side. Getting the offer at just 21 wasn’t luck, it was a clear sign that when preparation meets purpose, favor follows.

“I was even more surprised to find out I’m the only African selected to join the Global Risk Division in the EMEA region for 2025!” she adds.

But Similoluwa’s story doesn’t stop there. She’s also the founder of Impact Lead Africa, an initiative helping young girls and women grow through tech, leadership, and advocacy that supports healing and gender equality. Her work spans mentoring, digital tools, and development programs, all aimed at building a better future for Africa, led by empowered women.

Her journey shows that excellence doesn’t have to fit into one box. It can begin with law, grow through tech, and reach the world stage.

Now stepping into her new role at Bank of America, Similoluwa represents more than just herself. She stands for a new generation of African leaders, bold, prepared, and ready to make real change.
