FASU 2024: Doyin, Samuel scores as UNILAG Marines seal 2-0 win over UNIJOS

The UNILAG Marines continued their winning run at the 2024 FASU games as brilliant strikes from Adedoyinsola Omotosho and Oladepo Samuel ensured the Akokites triumph over the University of Jos in a 2-0 win on Tuesday evening.

Riding high in confidence from yesterday’s impressive 2-1 win over Nkumba University, Coach Oluwadun Babatunde’s side took it a notch higher by dominating the game against their Nigerian counterparts and from the blast of the whistle, a win for the Marines was inevitable.

Doyin Omotosho redeemed himself of the penalty loss vs UDS Ghana on Monday with a calm aura that helped him dispatch the ball into net from 18 yards as the Marines took a comfortable lead into half time.

After the goal, the attacking quartet of Omotosho Doyin, Lagbokun Ayomide, Olaonipekun Isaac, and Oladepo Samuel continued to pose dangerous threats to the UNIJOS defense as they tried to increase the lead with a couple of goal scoring chances created by the formidable midfield marshalled by captain Oluwaseun Oluwadumila and Peter Oladimeji.

The continuous push eventually paid off in the second half when Samuel– benefitting from a nice pass by Doyin–fired a wonderful long range strike from the right into the net to send UNIJOS goalkeeper, Alfred Magaji the wrong way.

The controversial moment of the game ensued when the referee ruled out Doyin’s brilliant lob into the net as a result of an unfortunate collision with goalkeeper Alfred. The game was then halted for a few minutes as the medics attended to Doyin but unfortunately, he couldn’t continue and was eventually replaced by Ogala David, who also gave a good account of himself.

As the Marines were on the ascendancy, the home crowd were further motivated to cheer them on to a deserved victory, the second consecutive win of the tournament.

In the other group game, Nkumba University defeated Universitie Julius Nyerere de Kankan 1-0, while in Group A, Lagos State University defeated University of Ghana 2-1, as Federal University, Oye, Ekiti defeated Kenyatta University 3-0.

UNILAG Marines–who are now joint leaders of Group B with 6 points–will take a break on Wednesday and their qualification fate will be decided when they play their final group game vs the Universitie Julius Nyerere de Kankan on Thursday by 4pm.
