Court Order: ASUU appeals ruling as Ashiru reacts

The Academic Staff Union of Universities will today file an appeal against the ruling of the National Industrial Court which directed its members to resume work.

Counsel for ASUU, Femi Falana (SAN), divulged this in an interview with The Punch in Abuja on Thursday.

Recall that Justice Polycarp Hamman on Wednesday ordered the union’s members back to work.

However, Falana told journalists, “We are filing the appeal tomorrow (Friday) morning. We just got the certified true copy of the judgment on Thursday. The appeal will be filed first thing Friday morning.”

In another news, ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos chapter, Dr. Dele Ashiru, has described the ruling as “unfair and rather shameful.”

Reacting to the court order, Ashiru said, “It is unfair and rather shameful that the industrial court has ruled in this manner.

“This is an unfair and unjust order. However, it is not surprising. As we have always argued, it is a lie to say the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.

“In the real sense and as this court ruling shows, the judiciary is simply an arm of the apparatus of the capitalist state, just as the police and army.”
