Content Marketer, Oyebode Oluwasegun, popularly known as Irewole has advised Mass Communication undergraduates to venture into digital skills that are profitable and also scalable.
He gave this advice on 26th October, 2024 as a keynote speaker at the one year anniversary webinar of the Communicators Corner.
Speaking on the topic” Leverage Digital Skills as a Path to a Meaningful Career”, Oyebode took time to explain to his listeners the prerequisites for choosing a particular digital skill.
” The skill you choose has to be what you’re good at, what you like and what is profitable and scalable”, he advised.
He further stated that students looking to start a career in the digital space must endeavour to work on projects that they can own and not just projects that give them money but cannot be published in their names.
“Doing something that can give you the opportunity to do other things, is a path to a meaningful career”, he said.
Oyebode also encouraged his audience to take courses on learning platforms like HubSpot and Udemy, saying that HubSpot courses are free while they might need to pay for some courses on Udemy.
He, however, warned that taking online courses does not guarantee a job, but added that the fundamental lessons learnt from the online course can help in handling real-life projects which potential employers want to see.
“Nobody is going to employ you because you’ve taken different courses online. They want to see what you’ve done in your portfolio, so as you take your online courses, also, pitch yourself to people around you and connect with people who are doing well in your dream field on social media like LinkedIn and ensure that you have real life experiences to add to your portfolio”, he noted.
On facing rejection, Oyebode emphasised that rejection is a constant thing when one is seeking employment and must be accepted when it happens.
” When I was applying for jobs, I received 10-12 rejections for every interview call but I just go through their feedback and continue building myself and intensify my applications to other platforms”.
Oyebode provided a detailed explanation of how to pitch oneself to potential employers by emphasising the need to personalise pitches, keeping them short and straight to the point (150-200 words).
“Your pitch should be structured with a personalised introduction, stating what you want and highlighting your experiences and why they should consider you”.
