The Bursar of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mrs Oluwafunmilola Adekunle, has called for stronger engagements between students and professional accounting bodies to expose them to career opportunities in the field.
Adekunle made the call when the National Executive Council of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), led by its National Chairperson, Mrs Blessing Osakwe-Ogo, paid her a courtesy visit at the University.
She states that professional accounting bodies should engage students through career talks, mentorship and other programmes that would help them gain a better insight of the profession.
Adekunle cited the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) as an example of a professional body that regularly engages students through programmes and other activities.
She added that closer collaboration between the University and professional accounting organisations would give students more opportunities to interact with practising professionals.
Osakwe-Ogo said SWAN was working to establish a chapter at UNILAG and would engage the Registrar of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on the process. She also said SWAN supports accountancy students through career talks, scholarships, seminars and other activities.
Dr Omowunmi Ogunleye of the Department of Accounting called for more opportunities for students to interact with professionals in the accounting field.
Ogunleye noted that the Department already has relationships with professional organisations and urged ICAN and SWAN to strengthen these relationships through programmes focused on students.
