UNILAG Postgraduate Student Launches Étude Learning App

A postgraduate student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Samuel Johnson, has launched Étude, a mobile learning platform designed to help students prepare for major examinations and access digital learning resources.

The platform, developed by Waltersam Global Technologies Ltd., was unveiled on September 18, 2026, at the Bank of Industry UNILAG Incubation and Co-Working Hub, located at the university’s Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre, Akoka.

According to Johnson, Étude is targeted at candidates preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Post-UTME examinations, as well as students beginning their university education.

He noted that the platform provides syllabus-aligned lessons and Computer-Based Test (CBT) mock examinations designed to help students practise for examinations. It also features learning streaks to encourage users to maintain consistent study habits.

The National Project Coordinator of the Student Venture Capital Grant (SVCG), Adebayo Onigbanjo, who represented the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the launch reflected the impact of the Federal Government’s support for student innovators.

He said 45 students were identified as future innovators and founders through the SVCG, adding that Waltersam Technologies was among the companies that received a ₦50 million equity-free grant funded by the Federal Government.

Onigbanjo described the investment as part of efforts to support young Nigerians developing innovative solutions.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Developmental Services), UNILAG, Prof. Afolabi Lesi, said technology should be used to expand the possibilities of classroom learning, rather than replace traditional education.

“Reimagining education isn’t about replacing the classroom with technology,” he said.

“It’s about expanding what the classroom can become.”

Lesi added that technology could create learning experiences that were more accessible, engaging and responsive to the needs of learners.

The Board Chairman of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, encouraged young people to pursue their ideas and develop valuable skills despite challenges.

He urged young innovators to focus on their ideas and have the courage to pursue them.

The Board Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Idris Ibikunle, said the launch marked the beginning of a longer journey for the platform, stressing the need for Étude to remain relevant and adapt over time.

Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Waltersam Technologies, said the platform was inspired by challenges he experienced after secondary school and had evolved into a six-year journey of developing a digital solution to improve learning for students.

Oluwafemi Paul, Chief Technical Officer of Waltersam Technologies, alongside other members of the Étude team, demonstrated the mobile application and highlighted some of its features.

According to Waltersam Technologies, Étude was developed within UNILAG innovation ecosystem before becoming part of the company’s wider digital solutions.

The company describes the platform as its flagship proprietary product, developed to showcase its capabilities in software engineering, user experience design and digital education.

The unveiling attracted stakeholders, including the Dean of Student Affairs, Agunsoye Johnson; Non-Executive Director of UBA, Henrietta Ugboh; Executive Director of UNILAG Business School, Sunday Abayomi; and Chairperson of the Board of the International School, UNILAG, Bolajoko Dixon-Ogbechi.

The stakeholders commended the initiative and expressed support for digital solutions, aimed at improving access to learning and expanding educational opportunities.
