UNILAG DVC Asks Students to Participate in Campus Maintenance

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folusho Lesi, has called on students to take active participation in ensuring proper sanitation within the school campus.

He said that students have a role to play in maintaining a conducive campus environment, adding that this will foster a healthy, sustainable, and welcoming learning environment.

The DVC made this call to action during an interview with UNILAG Sun at the clean-up exercise, organised by Millennium Campus Fellows, UNILAG cohort, in collaboration with the Mass Communication Students’ Association (MCSA), on December 13, 2025.

Lesi said that the campus environment belongs to the students, adding that they should take charge of environmental sustainability and not wait to be told.

“Leadership is not just at the level of the vice-chancellor, deans, provost, and presidents of student associations,” he said.

“Leadership is found at every level, and students play a critical role.

“It is not just when student leaders call you out, even on your own, without being watched, you have a role to play in this sustainability.

“We can’t do this all the time. It is up to each student to take responsibility for their own space and environment.”

The DVC urged students to continuously partner with management in leading and driving initiatives that benefit the environment and the university, noting that such involvement reflects qualities employers value, when added to a curriculum vitae (CV).

A fellow campus director for Cohort A of the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), UNILAG, Megwara Favour said he was inspired to participate in the clean-up initiative in order to serve as a point of contact for change.

He urged people to change their mindset towards environmental sustainability and take responsibility by becoming solution-driven and calling others to order when necessary.

Emmanuel Awolowo, another co-campus lead, reiterated that individuals should take deliberate actions to maintain their immediate environment, urging the government to create more awareness.

Speaking on environmental sustainability, a campus director for Cohort A MCN, UNILAG, Odusola Mariam noted that people tend to overlook negative conditions in their environment unless they are directly affected.

 She stressed that everyone should take steps towards environmental responsibility.

“When you see something, say something,” she said.

“When you say something, do something because environmental crises and climate disasters won’t just go on their own.”
