The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folashade Ogunsola, said academic excellence without integrity is insignificant, adding that students should focus on building strong values and character.
She made the remarks while delivering her speech at the matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, held at Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall, UNILAG, on 17 December 2025.
Ogunsola noted that education at UNILAG goes beyond academic milestones, urging newly admitted students to put effort into securing a good reputation while in school, as it has a lasting impact on how people perceive them.
“Reputation, once lost, is difficult to regain,” she said.
“Let your actions, whether in the classroom, hostels, or the wider society, reflect truth, responsibility, and respect.”
Ogunsola warned students against engaging in social vices, adding that adherence to rules and regulations does not indicate weakness but rather reflects self-discipline, maturity, professionalism, and respect for societal norms.
She also noted the importance of responsible social media use, encouraging students to choose friends wisely and associate with those of good character.
“If you cannot say something in person, then you should not be able to say it digitally,” she said.
“Let discipline guide your choices and responsibility define your stay here.”
Describing university as a journey of personal discovery, Ogunsola advised students to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth rather than reasons to give up.
She further urged students to take advantage of the university’s resources, including library services, research facilities, entrepreneurship centres, mentorship programmes, and innovation hubs, to prepare for life beyond the campus.
The VC reiterated that every student should see education as a tool for making change in themselves and in the world at large.
