UNILAG Student Wins Huawei Global ICT Competition in China

A Systems Engineering student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Peter Fagbola has won the Huawei Global ICT Competition in Shenzhen, China, where Team Nigeria Cloud emerged overall winners in the Cloud Track.

Fagbola is a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, and he represented Nigeria alongside his teammates at the global competition, which earned them first place and a cash prize of N3,500,000

According to a statement released by the University on Friday, July 31, 2026, Fagbola’s journey to the global stage began after he emerged as the overall winner in the Cloud and AI Track at the national competition while representing UNILAG.

The institution also noted that he subsequently progressed to the Southern Africa Regional Competition, where Team Nigeria Cloud secured first place to qualify Nigeria for the global finals held in Shenzhen, China.

Commending the achievement, the University described Fagbola’s success as a reflection of his hard work, resilience, and the quality of academic mentorship available at UNILAG.

“Mr. Fagbola’s success reflects not only his exceptional talent and dedication but also the quality of mentorship and training provided by UNILAG,” the statement reads.

“His achievement is a testament to the University’s commitment to nurturing innovators who can compete and win at the highest levels.”

The University also said that, following the global victory, Fagbola was invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, where he and other outstanding participants were formally recognised for their achievements.

UNILAG added that the accomplishment serves as an inspiration to students to pursue excellence in both national and international competitions.

“Mr. Fagbola’s feat is more than a trophy; it is a beacon of inspiration for other students to strive for excellence in both national and international competitions,” the university said.

“His story embodies the values of self-discovery, perseverance, and global competitiveness that UNILAG champions.”
