UNILAG Security Unit Unveils Quick Response Team, Other Measures for Proactive Operations

The coordinator of the Security Unit of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), David Omotosho, has disclosed that a dedicated task force called the UNILAG Quick Response Team (UQRT)  has been set up for emergency response in the institution.

He said that this, alongside other measures, is aimed at building a more proactive security system on campus.

In an interview with UNILAG Sun, Omotosho said the team was introduced to handle emergencies, emphasising it as a method for preparing security personnel to act promptly when a rescue call is received.

Omotosho revealed plans to acquire drones for real-time surveillance, monitoring, and for quick emergency alert, adding that it will enhance the security within and the vicinity surrounding the campus.  

He further expressed that the communication in the unit has improved, attributing it to the availability of more walkie-talkies and the supply of effective patrol vans by the alumni.

“When I came in, there were not many walkie-talkies, but now we have about 40 functioning well,” he said.

“Also, there was no patrol van. We reached out to the alumni, and right now, we have about six functioning vehicles that can perform.”                  

The security head highlighted some of the challenges the unit is currently facing, raising concerns about the limited personnel in the unit to effectively monitor and safeguard the campus. 

“There’s a shortage of manpower,” he said.

“For the campus to be effectively patrolled and covered, we need up to 1,500 personnel. But right now, because there’s an embargo on employment, we have about 200 plus, there’s a total of 209.

“Also, we have an auxiliary security personnel from the Nigerian Legion, they are about 185. So, when we calculated the total number of security personnel covering the University of Lagos, we are not up to 500.”

Omotosho, however, mentioned that there have been several trainings initiated to empower security personnel and enable them to understand their responsibilities in ensuring the safety of the school premises.
