UNILAG Law Faculty Tops GST Quiz Competition

The Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has emerged winner of the maiden edition of the General Studies (GST) Day quiz competition, defeating 24 contestants across 12 faculties, including the Distance Learning Institute (DLI).

The event, themed “The Future of e-Learning,” was organised by the Centre for General Studies at the Nurudeen Alao Auditorium of the DLI on July 8, 2025, bringing undergraduates from across the faculties in the university to compete in a test of knowledge.

In the first round, eight faculties advanced, including Arts, Engineering, Law, Basic Medical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Sciences, and Social Sciences. Following a competitive round, three faculties made it to the final round – Law, Science, and Environmental Sciences.

After the final round, the Faculty of Law clinched the top spot, followed by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences as first and second runners-up, respectively.

A cash prize of ₦200,000 and a trophy were presented to the winning team by Prof. Bolajoko Dixon-Ugbechi, Chairman of the ISL Management Board, UNILAG.

The first and second runners-up received ₦150,000 and ₦100,000, respectively.

The Director of the Centre for General Studies, Prof. Aderonke Lawal-Are, and other dignitaries, including Mrs. Ediri Ise-Ediale, a lead Psychotherapist, were also present at the award ceremony.

In his speech, Prof. Lawal stated that the relevance of General Studies (GST) courses extends beyond the classroom, describing it as not just about specialization but about versatility.

“Many students often ask why we take GST courses when they aren’t part of our core discipline? The answer is simple but profound.

“Education is not just about specializing in your course; it’s about versatility, integration, transformation and enlightenment,” she explained.

She highlighted how GST opens up a broad academic coverage of philosophy, culture, logic, communication, and entrepreneurship, encouraging students to approach the courses with a willing heart.

The President of the UNILAG Alumni Association Worldwide, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, who served as Father of the Day, while addressing the audience, urged students to embrace learning beyond their major fields and see GST as a tool for becoming well-rounded individuals.
