The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola
relaunched the “UNILAG Bread,” marking its return after years off the shelves.
The official launch ceremony took place on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Café 2001, New Hall Complex, Akoka Campus, UNILAG.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the brand, Ogunsola described the bakery as more than a commercial venture, adding that it would serve as a platform for entrepreneurship, skills development and innovation within the university.
“I will ask the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre to partner with the bakery,” she said.
“While the bakery teaches baking, the centre will teach business skills.”
She noted that the university prioritized quality and healthy production standards before approving the return of the UNILAG Bread brand.
“We cannot have any kind of bread,” she said.
“We must have bread that is good for us, not bread that is full of all sorts of chemicals.”
The VC encouraged staff to develop alternative sources of income, stressing that entrepreneurship is key to long-term financial security.
“Wealth does not come from salaries,” she said.
“Nobody anywhere in the world has been wealthy from their salary.
“Every wealthy man has multiple streams of income.”
She, however, cautioned that entrepreneurial pursuits should not interfere with employees’ official responsibilities.
“The multiple streams of income must not affect your normal work, she said.
The CEO of Goodness and Mercy Bakery, Mr. Olusheye Rotimi, said the relaunch of the bread was aimed at reviving a long abandoned legacy of the university.
“What we are starting is not something new; it is something that has always been part of the university,” he said.
“It is simply a part of the university that has been dormant.”
He noted the creation of opportunities for practical skills acquisition among staff and students.
“We want to partner with the university on skills acquisition,” he said.
“Staff and students can come here and train for as long as they want.”

The bakery will also offer specialty flavoured bread, including chocolate, coconut and sardine varieties, alongside pastries such as cakes, sausage rolls and meat pies.
The statement added that the bakery will officially commence operations on Monday, July 27, 2026, operating Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., while remaining closed on Sundays.
