NUC Visits Faculty of Communication and Media Studies for Resource Verification

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has visited the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for a resource verification exercise.

The visit is aimed at assessing the faculty’s readiness to commence new academic programmes in Public Relations & Advertising as well as Journalism, Broadcasting and Media Studies.

The visit is part of the commission’s quality assurance process to evaluate the adequacy of human and material resources before granting approval for new programmes.

The NUC team comprises of Mr. Paul Ebebona from the commission’s national headquarters in Abuja and Professor Fred Amadi, of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt; toured key facilities within the faculty, including studios, classrooms, and other physical infrastructure.

Speaking during the visit, Amadi expressed satisfaction with the level of improvement observed, noting that the developments seen were commendable.

“The NUC’s mandate is to ensure quality. We are here to verify both human and material resources to determine if the university is ready to begin the two new programmes: Public Relations and Broadcasting,” Ebebona said.

He added that staff strength, physical facilities, and library resources were being reviewed as part of the verification process.

The team also visited the university library, where officials highlighted policies guiding acquisitions, access to both physical and digital resources, and ongoing efforts to expand collections in line with the proposed programmes.

Prof. Sunday Oloruntola, Dean of the faculty, emphasised the faculty’s commitment to meeting required standards, noting that feedback from previous visits had been taken seriously.

“We are committed to making this faculty a centre of excellence in media studies in Nigeria,” he said.

An exit meeting is expected to be held with the university management and the vice-chancellor, where a preliminary report of the verification exercise will be presented.
