Lagos Deputy Governor Hamzat Calls for Development of AI Systems that Reflect Nigeria’s Linguistic, Cultural Diversity

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has advocated for the development of AI systems that reflect Nigeria’s linguistic and cultural diversity, rather than relying solely on systems designed around English and foreign contexts.

Hamzat made this call at the 13th Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe Memorial Anniversary Lecture held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Speaking on the theme, “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for the Sustainable Development of Nigeria’s Education System,” the deputy governor analysed how AI could also assist teachers in developing learning materials and assessing students.

This, he said, will help bridge existing learning gaps and aid marking schemes.

He further urged equal access to digital devices and technology for both privileged and disadvantaged students.

Hamzat, who is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 gubernatorial election in Lagos, expressed concerns about the protection of students’ personal and vital information as AI becomes increasingly integrated into education.

He also encouraged teachers to use AI as a tool to connect with students rather than perceiving AI as a threat.

The Chairman of the occasion, Owoeye Adedeji Adeyemo, stated that the event brought together, for the first time, the UNILAG Alumni Association, who are the organisers of the event, and Yaba Local Council Development Area(LCDA).

Adeyemo added that the union represented a bridge between “town and gown,” demonstrating how academia and grassroots governance could collaborate to promote development.

Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe was a Nigerian professor of Computer Science, an educational administrator, and a former vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos. He assumed office as UNILAG VC in 2010 but died in office on May 12, 2025.
