The Technical Office on Cancer Awareness and Advocacy, University of Lagos (TOCAA AMSUL), in collaboration with the Nigerian Universities Nursing Student Association, UNILAG Chapter (NUNSA UNILAG), and The White Cell Foundation has invited members of the university community for the 2025 World Leukaemia Awareness Day Blood Drive.
It has been scheduled to hold today, 16th July 2025, 9 a.m. at the university Sports Centre, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba.
According TOCAA AMSUL, “populace of the university are urged to participate in the blood donation, as each donor can stand the chance to save up to three lives with a single donation, get a free health check, including blood group, genotype, and cancer risk screening, and improve your heart health and reduce harmful iron stores.”
The 2025 drive is themed ‘Blood for Hope’ as it promises to be an avenue to beat blood shortages, raise leukemia awareness, and promote early cancer detection.
TOCAA AMSUL further stated that the drive is more than donating, as it involves showing up for people .
“It’s not just about donating blood, it’s about showing up for people who desperately need a second chance at life. This drive is your chance to be a hero right here in UNILAG,’ They said.
Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal cells disrupt the normal production of healthy blood cells, including red blood cells and platelets, which can lead to various health problems.
TOCAA AMSUL is however concerned about educating communities on different cancers to championing HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention.
