UPDATED: UNILAG Management to Meet Striking Lecturers on Wednesday

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) says it will meet with leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday, following the union’s decision to embark on an indefinite strike.

In a circular issued by the UNILAG Students’ Union, the university said management is already engaging the ASUU-UNILAG leadership in a bid to resolve the dispute.

According to the student union, discussions between the university management and ASUU leaders are ongoing, with another meeting scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The union added that in the worst-case scenario, only examinations scheduled for Wednesday may be affected by the strike.

“Students are therefore advised to remain calm and continue their preparations. Should there be no further communication confirming that examinations will proceed, it should be assumed that the examinations scheduled for tomorrow will not hold,” the circular reads.

It added that the advisory applies only to Wednesday’s examinations, expressing hope that the matter will be resolved promptly.

The students’ union also assured students that it would communicate further verified updates as soon as they become available.

ASUU-UNILAG had earlier declared an indefinite strike over the non-payment of full salaries.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency congress held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the union said its members would withdraw services starting Wednesday, March 11.

The union said the decision followed the non-payment of full salaries for January and February 2026.

ASUU described the university administration’s actions as “discriminatory and unfeeling”.

The union also accused the administration of amputating the February 2026 salaries, saying the move violates “all tenets of decency”.

According to the union, the payment issues affected staff across the university’s campuses.

It said some staff on the Akoka campus did not receive any Earned Allowance Adjustment (EAA) payments for January, adding that staff at the Idi-Araba campus reportedly did not receive either the EAA or the CATA payments.

Following the development, ASUU-UNILAG rejected the partial salary payments and directed its members to withdraw all services, noting that the strike would continue until the university pays the full salaries for January and February 2026.
