UNILAG Students Win Hydrography Research Competition

500-level students from the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, University of Lagos (UNILAG), have emerged as winners of the Hydrography Research Competition. They were announced winners of the competition at the World Hydrography Day and the 2025 West African Summit held from June 19th to June 21st, 2025, at the Abuja Continental Hotel. 

Titled “Designing a Sustainable Seabed Mapping Strategy for Nigeria’s Coastal Water,” their winning article topped entries from 12 other universities across all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. The team was comprised of Samuel Ajiboye, Ayomide Paul Oyewole, Sheriff Abiola Adewuyi, Ozioma Helen, and Abimbola Faith Ewenla. 

On Thursday, July 10, 2025, the students were presented to Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in a ceremony to recognise their achievement. The presentation was led by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Samson Adeosun, alongside Sub-Dean, Dr. Alfred Alademomi; Acting Head of Department, Dr. Emeka Epuh; and faculty members Dr. Adekunle Hamid-Mosaku and Dr. Emmanuel Ayodele.

The World Hydrography Day is celebrated every year on June 21, and it highlights the importance of hydrographic data in maritime safety, environmental stewardship and sustainable energy management.

On behalf of the university community, Professor Ogunsola praised the students for their outstanding performance and encouraged them to continue excelling in their academic journey.
