ShieldHer, Mascot Healthcare Offer Breast Scans in Akoka

Following its recent breast cancer outreach in Bariga, the ShieldHer Initiative has facilitated free breast scans for women identified with lumps, in partnership with Mascot Healthcare Centre, one of the sponsors of the outreach. The follow-up screenings, offered at no cost, took place on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, at Mascot Healthcare Centre. 

One of the beneficiaries, Dorcas Oluwagbemiro, described the experience as a privilege. “It’s a great opportunity and it gives you the privilege to know more about yourself, because people don’t give room for taking care of themselves,” she said. Another participant, Mrs. Ayoola Toyin, commended the organisers, saying, “It is superb! I’m grateful to the organiser, and I pray that God helps him.”

Lateefah Sanni, who was advised to undergo surgery after her scan, appreciated the initiative. “I was told I have lumps in my breast and I should remove them with surgery. I am grateful for this opportunity,” she said. Rukayat Thomas also shared her appreciation, noting the importance of the care she received and the attention given to women in the community.

Dr. Lawal Kehinde, the attending physician at Mascot Healthcare, emphasised the need for widespread support for early detection. “If every clinic takes on 10 free scans every year, the issue of breast cancer will be solved,” he stated. He pointed out that many women avoid screenings due to the perceived cost and called for clinics to collaborate in subsidising scan fees to reduce the breast cancer burden.

He also advised organisers of breast cancer outreaches to engage more medical professionals and encourage independent research. According to him, breast scans are most appropriate for women aged 40 and above, and more education is needed to foster preventive health practices among younger women.

Mascot Healthcare, though not equipped for surgeries or deliveries, offers various diagnostic scans, treats a range of conditions, and educates its patient community through newsletters and annual health programs. Located at No. 52 Solanke Street, Akoka, Mascot’s collaboration with ShieldHer Initiative reflects a commitment to community health and cancer prevention.
